Childhood problems we see

  • General health

Colic and excessive crying in babies · Reflux · Poor feeding · Sleep problems · Weight concerns · Fatigue · Chest pain · Enlarged lymph nodes

The everyday worries parents bring to a paediatrician: a baby who cries inconsolably, a child not feeding or sleeping, or one whose weight has stalled.

  • Stomach and bowel

Abdominal pain · Diarrhoea · Constipation

Recurring tummy pain, diarrhoea and constipation are among the commonest reasons children are seen. An abdominal ultrasound can follow if needed.

  • Allergy and breathing

Persistent cough · Asthma · Eczema · Skin rashes · Hay fever · Recurrent chest infections · Recurrent sore throat, laryngitis and sinus infection

Persistent cough, asthma, hay fever, eczema and repeated chest or sinus infections. Skin prick testing is available here.

  • Bladder and puberty

Bedwetting at night (enuresis) · Recurrent urinary tract infections · Very heavy or prolonged periods (menorrhagia) · Absent periods (amenorrhoea)

Bedwetting at night, repeated urinary tract infections, and periods that are very heavy, prolonged or have not started — all common reasons to see a paediatrician.

  • Skin

Eczema · Rashes · Reactions to foods or contact

Eczema, rashes, and reactions that follow a food or contact with something. The appointment looks at when the skin changes appear and what they follow.

  • Neurological

    Headaches

Headaches in children have many causes, from sleep and screen time to migraine. The assessment goes through the pattern before anything is concluded.

Private children’s health in London

Paediatric care

Consultant paediatricians see children and adolescents for non-urgent problems — from colic and feeding in babies to asthma, eczema, tummy pain and headaches in older children. The service runs from birth up to and including 16 years, and on a case-by-case basis at 17.

You do not need a GP referral to book, and appointments are unhurried: 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how complex your child’s history is. The price is shown before you book.

Paediatrics, led by Dr Dalbir Sohi

Dr Dalbir Sohi is a consultant paediatrician and child allergy specialist who has worked in London for more than twenty years, and is clinical lead for the Children and Adolescent Allergy Service at University College London Hospital (UCLH). Food allergy, eczema, asthma, hay fever, reflux and colic are the problems she is most often asked about.

She graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow after a degree in immunology and medical microbiology at Imperial College, and holds a Master’s in clinical paediatrics from University College London. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), and has held senior leadership roles including clinical director for paediatrics and neonates at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust.

Alongside her clinical practice she teaches and examines: she is an examiner for the RCPCH and a medical director for the Advanced Paediatric Life Support Group, has contributed to peer-reviewed publications, and has held board positions including with the Department of Health’s Allergy National Clinical Pathways initiative.

If your child needs help urgently, this is not the service to wait for: contact your GP, call NHS 111, or go to A&E — 999 in an emergency.

  • Mould spores
  • Animal dander (cats, dogs, rodents)

Food allergies

  • Nuts (peanuts, tree nuts)

Medication allergies

  • Penicillin and other antibiotics (limited testing available)

Latex allergy

  • Reactions to natural rubber latex

What it does not show.It does not detect delayed reactions such as contact dermatitis, or intolerances such as lactose intolerance. Results are read alongside your child’s history. Food challenges are not offered here.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions parents ask us most often before booking.

Cannot see yours? Get in touch or call — we would rather answer it than have you guess.

What paediatric services do you offer at the London Diagnostic Centre?

The general paediatric clinic assesses and treats non-urgent childhood and adolescent problems: colic and excessive crying, reflux, poor feeding, sleep and weight concerns, fatigue, chest pain and enlarged lymph nodes; abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation; persistent cough, asthma, eczema, skin rashes, hay fever and recurrent chest, throat and sinus infections; bedwetting, recurrent urinary tract infections and puberty-related problems including heavy or absent periods; and headaches. Skin prick testing for allergies is carried out in the clinic.

Can I see a paediatrician without a referral?

Yes. You can book directly without a referral from your GP. If you intend to claim on private medical insurance, check your policy first — some insurers require a referral letter before they will authorise a consultation.

How can I book an appointment for my child?

You can request a paediatric appointment online from this page, or call 020 8920 3129 and the team will arrange it with you. The price of each appointment is shown before you book, and nothing is paid online.

How long does a paediatric consultation usually last?

A standard paediatric consultation usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the nature of the problem and how complex your child's history is.

What should I bring to my child's first appointment?

Bring your child's medical history as far as you have it: any previous diagnoses, results of tests already done, the red book or vaccination record, and a list of any medicines your child is currently taking. Bring your questions written down as well — appointments go quickly, and it is easy to leave without asking the thing you came about.

How much does a private paediatrician cost?

The fee for each paediatric appointment is published on this page, on the card for that appointment, and again before you confirm a booking. There is no charge for booking and nothing is paid online. If you are claiming on private medical insurance, check what your policy covers before the appointment.

Do you accept private health insurance?

Appointments can be settled privately, and whether your policy covers a paediatric consultation depends on the policy rather than on the clinic — some insurers require a GP referral letter and pre-authorisation first. Check with your insurer before you book. Our paying with insurance page lists the insurers this clinic works with.

What does a skin prick test show, and what does it not show?

A skin prick test looks for immediate, IgE-mediated allergy — the type of reaction that comes on within minutes of contact. It does not detect delayed allergic reactions such as contact dermatitis, and it does not detect intolerances such as lactose intolerance. A positive result is interpreted alongside your child's history rather than on its own, and food challenges are not offered as part of this clinic.

What ages does the paediatric clinic see?

From birth up to and including 16 years, and on a case-by-case basis for 17-year-olds. The service is for non-urgent childhood and adolescent problems; if your child needs help urgently, contact your GP, call NHS 111, or go to A&E — 999 in an emergency.

Can I contact the paediatrician after the appointment if I have further questions?

Yes. You can contact the clinic with follow-up questions after an appointment and the team will help. Anything that needs a clinical decision — a change of medicine, or a new symptom — will usually need a follow-up appointment rather than a message, because it needs a proper review.

Where is your paediatric clinic in London?

The London Diagnostic Centre is at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, 1 Grovelands Road, London N13 4RJ — in London, a few minutes from Southgate, Winchmore Hill, Enfield and Wood Green, and reachable by car, bus and rail.
