What a FibroScan measures, and what it cannot tell you

A FibroScan is a form of transient elastography. A probe held against the skin over the right side of your ribs sends a gentle pulse into the liver and times how fast it travels through the tissue. Stiffer tissue carries that pulse more quickly, and stiffness is used as a proxy for fibrosis — the scarring that builds up when a liver has been under strain from fat, from alcohol, from a virus or from a long-term condition.

The measurement is genuinely useful, and its limits are worth knowing before you book. A scan or test is information, not a diagnosis, and does not replace seeing a doctor. It is not a biopsy: it cannot take a sample, and it cannot name the cause of a raised result. A very high body mass index, or fluid in the abdomen, can make a reading unreliable, and the operator will say so at the time rather than hand you a figure they do not trust.

• People with type 2 diabetes, a high BMI or metabolic syndrome, who more often carry liver fat.

You will notice that no threshold figures appear on this page, and that is deliberate: nobody should grade their own liver against a number found on the internet. The report is written for a doctor to read with everything else they know about you, which is why a copy goes to your GP or consultant with your consent. A FibroScan measures what has happened to the liver; it does nothing about what is causing it. If you are worried about how much you are drinking, speak to your GP or book a private GP appointment alongside the scan — and if you are drinking heavily every day, get medical advice before you cut down suddenly, because stopping abruptly can be dangerous.

Preparing for your FibroScan

Preparation is light. You will usually be asked to come without food for a few hours beforehand, because a recent meal changes the blood flow through the liver and can push the reading up. Water is normally fine. The team confirm exactly what is wanted for your appointment when they ring you back, so please follow what they tell you rather than a figure from a leaflet or a forum.

Wear something that lets you uncover the lower right side of your chest without difficulty; two pieces are easier than a dress. Bring any recent liver blood results or ultrasound reports you hold. Tell the team when you book if you are pregnant or think you may be, if you have an implanted device such as a pacemaker, or if you have been told you have fluid in your abdomen, because each of those affects whether the test is suitable.

• Come without food for the number of hours the team specify; water is normally allowed.
• Bring photo identification, and a referral letter if one exists.
• Bring recent blood results, earlier scan reports and a list of your medicines.
• Bring your policy number and authorisation reference if you are claiming on insurance.
• Tell us in advance about a pacemaker or similar device, or a possible pregnancy.

There is no injection, no contrast and no sedation, so you may drive yourself to the clinic and drive away afterwards. You can eat the moment the scan is finished — book first thing and you can have breakfast on the way home to Winchmore Hill or Grange Park. Booking for a child? Tell us their age when you ring. A patient under 16 must be brought by a parent or someone with parental responsibility, who consents to the test with them, and some examinations are not suitable for children — the team will say plainly if yours is not one we can do.

How long does a FibroScan take, and when does the result come?

The appointment is booked at 15 minutes, which covers checking in, the measurement and time for your questions. The measuring itself is quick: the operator takes a series of readings from the same spot and the machine combines them, and most people feel no more than a light tap against the skin each time. Nothing enters the body and there is no recovery period at all.

Your written report is normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment. You receive a copy and, with your consent, we can send it to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours. The operator will not interpret the reading for you on the day; that belongs to the reporting clinician, and the report is what your doctor acts on.

Same or next-day appointments are often available, and because the scan is short it will often fit into a gap. The clinic runs weekdays from 9am to 5pm and both weekend days from 8am to 8pm, so a Saturday is possible when the working week is not.
