Where it is clinically appropriate, a private prescription can be issued at the end of the appointment. You take it to a pharmacy of your choosing and pay that pharmacy's own charge for the medicine at your own cost, which is separate from the fee you pay us.

A few honest limits are worth stating before you book. There are medicines this service does not prescribe at all — controlled drugs and medicines of dependence among them — whether it is a first prescription or a repeat. Continuing prescriptions belong with the practice that holds your full record. And a private appointment does not replace your NHS practice, which holds that record and your continuing care — with your consent we write to them so it stays complete. Booking for a child? Tell us their age when you ring. A patient under 16 must be brought by a parent or someone with parental responsibility, who consents to the appointment with them, and some examinations are not suitable for children — the team will say plainly if yours is not one we can do.

How booking a private GP appointment works

The process is deliberately plain, and no card details are taken on the website. You ask for a time, the team ring you back, and the fee is agreed with you before anything is put in the diary.

1. Send a request or telephone the clinic and say roughly what the appointment is about.
2. The team call you back, offer you a time and confirm the fee for the length you have chosen.
3. You are seen in person in Palmers Green, or by video if that suits you better on the day.
4. Any test the doctor recommends is agreed with you before you leave, and can often be done during the same visit.
5. You go home with a plan and, where it is clinically appropriate, a private prescription.

A video consultation is £90 for a quarter of an hour and covers the same ground where a physical examination is not needed, which suits people who are working, away, or too unwell to travel. How long is the appointment, and what follows it?

You decide the length when you book. Fifteen minutes at £90 is enough for one clear problem. Thirty minutes at £180 gives room for several, or for a history that deserves telling properly rather than in headlines. A video consultation is booked as fifteen minutes at £90. Whichever you choose, the time belongs to you, and nobody will move you along because the waiting room is filling up.

If a test is arranged, this is how the result reaches you. Imaging reports are normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment, and with your consent a copy goes to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours. Blood results depend on how long the laboratory takes to run the profile, so the team tell you at your appointment when to expect yours.

Travelling in from Enfield, or not travelling at all

Your appointment takes place at the London Diagnostic Centre, at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, 1 Grovelands Rd, London N13 4RJ. Before you plan the journey, it is worth saying that a video consultation is £90 for fifteen minutes and covers the same ground wherever the doctor does not need to examine you, which takes the trip out of it altogether; a home visit at £150 solves it from the other end. Both are agreed with you when the team ring back.

If you are coming in, Grovelands Road runs off Aldermans Hill, a few minutes' walk from Palmers Green station, and the 329 bus from Enfield Town to Turnpike Lane joins Green Lanes at Winchmore Hill just to the north. From Enfield Town the straightest drive is south on Green Lanes, the A105, through Bush Hill Park and Winchmore Hill. From the eastern side of the borough, come down the A10 Great Cambridge Road and cut west along Bury Street towards Winchmore Hill and Green Lanes.
