Ultrasound Guided Joint Injection
Ultrasound-guided Joint Injection
The treatment itself: local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication placed into the joint while the needle is watched on ultrasound. No GP referral is needed to book one.
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (per area)
The diagnostic scan of one area — shoulder, knee, hip, wrist, elbow, ankle or foot — for when it is not yet clear what is causing the pain.
Ultrasound Left Shoulder
A focused scan of the left shoulder: the rotator-cuff tendons, the bursa and the joint itself, for pain on lifting or reaching.
Ultrasound Right Shoulder
A focused scan of the right shoulder: the rotator-cuff tendons, the bursa and the joint itself, for pain on lifting or reaching.
Ultrasound Left Knee
A scan of the left knee — the soft tissues around the joint, swelling and fluid — often booked before deciding on an injection.
Ultrasound Right Knee
A scan of the right knee — the soft tissues around the joint, swelling and fluid — often booked before deciding on an injection.

Ultrasound-guided injections in London
Steroid joint injections
Find relief from pain and inflammation with ultrasound-guided steroid injections. The clinician uses real-time ultrasound imaging to guide the injection directly to the affected area, which makes the treatment more accurate than an injection given without imaging.
Whether you are dealing with long-standing joint pain or a sports injury, this minimally invasive treatment is used to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and restore movement. You do not need a GP referral to book.
Ultrasound-guided injections in London
Joint pain does not wait for a referral letter. You can book an ultrasound-guided injection at our London clinic yourself — no GP referral is needed, and the price is published on this page and confirmed with you before anything is arranged.
Your clinician examines the joint and scans it with ultrasound before deciding where the injection should go. The same scan then guides the needle, so the medication reaches the shoulder, knee, hip, wrist or smaller joint that is actually causing the trouble rather than the area around it.
If a GP or consultant asked for the injection, tell us when we call and the report goes back to them as well as to you. If you are not sure whether an injection or a diagnostic ultrasound scan is the right first step, say so — we would rather book you the appointment you need than the one you asked for.
Benefits of ultrasound guidance
An injection given without imaging is placed by feel. An ultrasound-guided injection is placed by sight — the joint, the needle and the medication are all on screen as it happens. The drug is the same either way. Where it ends up is not.
- Accuracy. The needle is watched onto the target rather than estimated, so the medication goes where it is meant to.
- Comfort. Seeing the joint usually means fewer attempts to place the needle.
- Safety. Nearby tendons, nerves and blood vessels stay in view throughout.
- Relief. The local anaesthetic settles the immediate pain; the anti-inflammatory acts over the days that follow.
Which joints and conditions we inject
Shoulder, knee and hip are the joints treated most often, and the same approach is used for the wrist, elbow, ankle, foot and hand. It is used for osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, and for the soft-tissue problems around a joint — tendonitis and bursitis, plantar fasciitis at the heel, and carpal tunnel syndrome at the wrist.
Not sure whether you need the injection or a diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound scan first? Tell us what you have been feeling when we call and we will say which.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions people ask us most often before booking an ultrasound-guided injection.
Cannot see yours? Get in touch or call — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
What is an ultrasound-guided joint injection?
It is a minimally invasive procedure in which medication is placed directly into a joint space under the guidance of ultrasound imaging. It is used to relieve pain and inflammation in joints affected by conditions such as arthritis, bursitis or tendonitis.
How does the injection work?
The clinician uses ultrasound imaging to see the joint and to place the needle precisely. Once the needle is in position within the joint space, a combination of local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication is injected to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
What are the benefits of ultrasound guidance?
Greater accuracy in reaching the affected joint, a reduced risk of complications, and medication delivered directly to the site of the pain or inflammation. The ultrasound shows the needle in real time, so its placement can be seen rather than estimated.
Who can benefit from an ultrasound-guided joint injection?
People with joint pain or inflammation from conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis or bursitis. It may also be suggested for people who have not responded to treatments such as oral medication or physiotherapy.
Is the injection painful?
Some people feel mild discomfort during the procedure. The injection site is normally numbed with a local anaesthetic first, and most people tolerate it well.
How long does the appointment take?
Allow 30 minutes for the appointment. The injection itself takes only a few minutes; the rest is the consultation beforehand and the checks around it.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If you do have a referral letter from a GP or a consultant, bring it with you — it tells the clinician what has already been tried.
How much does it cost?
£295 for one area, at a fixed price. Nothing is paid online — the price is confirmed with you when we call to arrange the appointment.
Can I use private medical insurance?
Often, but it depends on your policy and your level of cover — being approved by an insurer is not the same as your policy covering a particular treatment. Check with your insurer before you book, and ask whether they need to authorise it first.
