Private women’s health in London

Menopause and sexual health

A menopause consultation is time to talk through your symptoms and history properly. The clinician you see can discuss treatment options — which may include hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where it is suitable for you — along with their benefits and risks, which depend on your age, symptoms and individual risk factors.

Sexual health testing is private and confidential, and the clinician you see will advise what is right for you rather than working from a fixed list. Same or next-day appointments are usually available, and the fee for every appointment is published below, so you know what it costs before you book.

What is menopause?

Menopause is the natural point at which periods stop, usually between the ages of 45 and 55, and it is identified after 12 months without a period. The years leading up to it are called the perimenopause, and this is when most people first notice a change — periods becoming irregular, heavier or lighter, and symptoms starting while periods are still coming. That stage can last several years. Falling hormone levels — particularly oestrogen and progesterone — can cause hot flushes and night sweats, disturbed sleep, mood changes, anxiety and low mood, difficulty concentrating or remembering (often described as brain fog), joint aches, vaginal dryness, reduced libido, palpitations and headaches. Menopause before the age of 45 is called early menopause, and before 40 it is called premature ovarian insufficiency; it can also follow surgery to remove the ovaries, or some cancer treatments. It is a normal stage of life, but symptoms vary widely in how severe they are and how long they last, and the right support can make a real difference to day-to-day wellbeing. A menopause consultation is where those symptoms are gone through properly and the options — including HRT, where it is suitable for you, along with its benefits and risks — are discussed.

Sexual health for women

Regular testing matters because many sexually transmitted infections — chlamydia among them — often cause no symptoms. Testing is private and confidential, and typically covers infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis; the clinician you see will advise what is right for you, and no single test covers every infection.

We also offer cervical smear tests, contraceptive advice, and coil and implant consultations, fitting-related care and removals. A coil fitting can be uncomfortable and some people find it painful; a local anaesthetic can help — talk it through with the clinician before you decide.

Coil and implant appointments have their own page — fittings, removals and fees.

When should I test for a sexually transmitted infection?

Many STIs cause no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. Timing matters: a test taken too soon after sex can miss an infection. As a guide, chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are reliable from about two weeks after exposure, laboratory HIV tests from about 45 days, and syphilis tests from about 12 weeks. The clinician you see will advise what to test for and when, and no single test covers every infection.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can arrange any of the appointments on this page yourself, which is one of the advantages of a private clinic — there is no referral letter to chase and no wait for one. If you already have a referral from a GP or consultant, bring it with you.

What happens in a menopause consultation?

It is time to talk through your symptoms and your history properly, rather than a short appointment. The clinician you see can discuss the treatment options open to you — which may include hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where it is suitable for you — along with their benefits and risks, which depend on your age, your symptoms and your individual risk factors. A follow-up appointment reviews how treatment is going, any side effects, and what the next step should be.

Do I need an appointment before a coil or implant is fitted?

Yes — a short consultation is booked before a fitting, in person or by telephone. It covers the options available to you, what the procedure involves, and the possible complications and side effects, so that nothing on the day is a surprise. Fittings, removals and their fees have their own page on this site.

What do these appointments cost?

Every fee is published on this page, so you know what an appointment costs before you book. A menopause consultation is £250 and a follow-up is £180. The remaining appointments are listed in the fees section above, and the fee is confirmed with you before anything is arranged.

Is my appointment confidential?

Yes. Sexual health testing here is private and confidential, and the clinician you see will advise what is right for you rather than working from a fixed list of tests.

Where is the clinic?

The clinic is in London, N13 — a short journey from Southgate, Winchmore Hill, Enfield, Wood Green and Muswell Hill. The full address and directions are on the contact page.

When will I get my results?

The clinician who arranges your tests will tell you how and when your results will reach you, and will explain what they mean rather than leaving you to interpret a report. If you have not heard by the time you were expecting to, call the clinic and ask — chasing it is never a nuisance.
