What happens during an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to make a moving image of what lies beneath the skin. No ionising radiation is involved at any point, which is why the same area can be looked at again later if a doctor wants to compare. Most people describe the experience as painless, though pressure from the probe can be uncomfortable over a sore spot.

Please note that the clinic does not carry out pregnancy scans of any kind. If you are pregnant, or think you might be, tell us when you book, because it can affect whether a test is suitable for you.

The appointment itself is straightforward:

1. You are shown in and asked to expose only the area being examined.
2. Clear gel is spread over the skin to carry the sound waves through.
3. The sonographer passes a handheld transducer back and forth over the site.
4. Live images are captured on screen and kept for the clinician who reports on them.

Nothing is injected, there is nothing to sleep off, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. Preparation varies: a few abdominal scans want you to skip a meal, some pelvic scans want a full bladder, and many need nothing whatsoever. Whatever applies to yours is explained on the confirmation call. Booking for a child? Tell us their age when you ring. A patient under 16 must be brought by a parent or someone with parental responsibility, who consents to the test with them, and some examinations are not suitable for children — the team will say plainly if yours is not one we can do, and there is more on paediatric care. Where a pelvic scan would show more from inside, a slim internal probe may be offered — that is discussed with you first, and it only goes ahead if you agree. If you would like a chaperone for an internal scan, ask when the team ring you back and they will confirm whether one is available for the time you want; you are welcome to bring someone in with you as well.

How much time should I set aside?

Each ultrasound appointment is 20 to 25 minutes, which covers the scan and whatever you want to ask before you leave. The exact figure booked for the scan you need is printed alongside its price on this page, so you can plan a return train from Enfield Chase or Grange Park without guessing at it.

Your written report is normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment. You receive a copy and, with your consent, we can send it to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours.

Weekend slots run from 8am on Saturday and Sunday, which is often easier than trying to prise a scan out of a working week.

Some abdominal scans ask you to have eaten nothing for several hours, which usually makes an early slot easier than a late one; some pelvic scans ask you to arrive with a full bladder, which means drinking to a set time rather than on arrival.
