What happens during an ultrasound scan

An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves, not ionising radiation. The probe builds a live image of the soft tissue underneath it as the sonographer works. Nothing is injected for a standard scan and there is no dose to keep count of, which is why one can be repeated whenever it is clinically worthwhile.

In the room, it goes like this:

1. The sonographer checks what has brought you in and answers anything you want to ask.
2. You lie on the couch with only the area being examined uncovered.
3. Gel goes onto the skin and the probe passes over it while the pictures build.
4. The images are saved and written up into the report that reaches you afterwards.

You can eat, drive and go straight back to work afterwards; there is no sedation and nothing to recover from. Whether you need to fast, or to arrive with a full bladder, depends on the scan, and the team tell you which when they confirm the booking. If a pelvic scan would be clearer from the inside, with a slim, tube-shaped probe, that is explained first and only done if you are happy with it. If you would like a chaperone for an internal scan, ask when the team ring you back and they will confirm whether one is available for the time you want; you are welcome to bring someone in with you as well. A patient under 16 must be brought by a parent or someone with parental responsibility, who consents to the test with them, and some examinations are not suitable for children — the team will say plainly if yours is not one we can do. How long will the appointment take?

Your written report is normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment. You receive a copy and, with your consent, we can send it to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours.
